The 5L40-E (and similar 5L50) are a series of automatic transmissions made by General Motors.Designed for longitudinal engine configurations, the series includes 5 forward gears and is used in the GM Sigma platform vehicles from Cadillac, the Pontiac Solstice, BMW, and Holden Commodore.
The 4T80-E is a hydramatic transmission and was developed for use with V8 front-wheel-drive cars, and at the time exclusively the Cadillac Northstar engine. The 4L30-E was used in many European and Japanese vehicles, including the BMW 3-and 5 Series, Isuzu Rodeo and its derivatives, and Opel Omega/Cadillac Catera. It was replaced by the 5-speed 5L40-E/5L50. The 4L30-E was built at GM's transmission plant in Strasbourg, France.
