A 3 km (1.9 mi) long fissure opened in the same area as the December 2023 eruption, between the Sundhnúksgígar craters and the hill of Stóra-Skógfell, about 4 km (2.5 mi) north-east of Grindavík. About two-thirds of the lava flowed west into the Svartsengi area, extending up to 4.5 km (2.8 mi) from the eruption centre.
The eruption was initially a row of fissures, but has since then been confined to 1 crater. As of 25 April 2024, land uplift resumed after almost grinding to a complete halt at the start on the March 16 eruption. The eruption finished on the 9th of May. [19] In the interlude between the March 16 and May 29 eruptions, land uplift occurred.
The eruptions, of which there have been seven so far, began after an intense series of earthquakes in November 2023. Although localised, the seismic and volcanic activity have caused significant disruption across the western part of the peninsula, especially for the town of Grindavík.
In 2010, ash clouds from eruptions at Eyafjallajokull in the south of Iceland spread over large parts of Europe, grounding some 100,000 flights and forcing hundreds of Icelanders to evacuate homes.
