Buggy and Mr. 3 come across Mr. 2's cell, and release him, telling him Luffy is in the prison, working his way towards level 5. Meanwhile, the navy arrives at Impel Down to help capture Luffy. The captain of the guards, Sadie, order them to guard the outside of the prison, as the Impel Down guards are perfectly capable of catching Luffy themselves.
The escaped prisoners make their way to Impel Down's exit, dealing with any prison guards who try to stop them. When Magellan begins to thin their numbers, Blackbeard arrives to help Luffy by holding him off. Even though he wants to take revenge on Blackbeard for Ace's capture, Luffy escapes with the other inmates.
Meanwhile, in Marineford, Sengoku is being told that Blackbeard released the Impel Down inmates to join his crew earlier. Sengoku is enraged by Blackbeard and the World Government, which doesn't want to see its reputation being damaged any more and therefore orders to withhold the news that more prisoners from Level 6 have escaped from Impel Down.
The remaining 4 episodes give insight into the fates of Luffy's crew, while Luffy with Hancock's help, who fell in love with him, travels to Impel Down, the world's largest prison, to save his adoptive older brother, Portgas D. Ace, from execution. The season initially ran from July 5 through October 11, 2009 on Fuji Television in Japan.
Hancock helps him infiltrate the underwater prison Impel Down to rescue Ace. Inside he meets previous foes and new allies, such as former Warlords Crocodile and Arlong's old captain Jimbei. Along with Buggy and members of the Revolutionary Army, Luffy frees the prisoners, but Ace is transferred to Marineford for his execution.
