Gratiot County (/ ˈ ɡ r æ ʃ ɪ t / GRASH-it) is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census , the population was 41,761. [ 2 ] The county seat is Ithaca , [ 3 ] although its most populous city is Alma .

Alma was founded in 1853 by Ralph Ely. Perhaps first known for the Alma Springs Sanitarium, built and promoted in the 1880s by millionaire lumberman and capitalist Ammi W. Wright, it achieved its greatest prominence nationally in the 1910s and 1920s as home of the Republic Motor Truck Company, briefly the largest exclusive truck manufacturer in the world. [5]

Fort Gratiot Township (/ ˈ ɡ r æ ʃ ɪ t / GRASH-it) [3] is a charter township of St. Clair County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 11,242 at the 2020 Census . [ 4 ] It is named for Fort Gratiot , an American fort located there off and on between 1814 and 1879.
