National Curriculum and Textbook Board traces its origins to the East Pakistan School Textbook Board which was established in 1954. In 1971, the Bangladesh School Textbook Board was established. In 1976 it was constituted as the National Curriculum and Syllabus Committee and the National Curriculum Development Centre was established in 1981.
The syllabus most common in usage is the National Curriculum and Textbooks, which has two versions, a Bengali version and an English version. Edexcel and Cambridge syllabus are used for most of the English-medium schools. Other syllabi are also used, although rarely.
All students must study a set of core subjects including Bangla, English, General Mathematics, Information and Communication Technology, Religion (Islam or Hindu or Buddhist or Christian depending on student's religion) and Moral Education. These subjects form the foundation of the SSC syllabus and are mandatory for all students.
