The upper montane forests extend from approximately 2,300 meters up to 3,300 meters elevation. A belt of subalpine dwarf forests forms the transition between the montane forests and the high-elevation páramo alpine grasslands. [4] [3] Laurels and oaks are the predominant canopy trees in the lower montane forests, growing up to 40 meters high.
It is surrounded at lower elevations by the Talamancan montane forests. The World Wide Fund for Nature includes the Costa Rican páramo within the montane forests ecoregion, although the páramo has a distinct flora with affinities to the páramo of the Northern Andes.
Texas Farm Bureau produces two member publications: Texas Agriculture for agricultural producers and Texas Neighbors for non-producing members. [9] News services also include a television program, “Voices of Agriculture,” on RFD-TV, and the “Texas Farm Bureau Radio Network,” which has more than 60 affiliate radio stations across Texas. [10]
Montane forests in temperate climate are typically one of temperate coniferous forest or temperate broadleaf and mixed forest, forest types that are well known from Europe and northeastern North America. Montane forests outside Europe tend to be more species-rich, because Europe during the Pleistocene offered smaller-area refugia from the glaciers.
The strip of lowlands runs for 500 km west to east, and typically only 50 km wide. The higher elevations in the mountains to the east are in the Talamancan montane forests ecoregion. The mountains are an active volcanic zone, and most of the soils are derived from the parent basalt bedrock. [3]
The Texas Blackland Prairies ecoregion covers an area of 50,300 km 2 (19,400 sq mi), consisting of a main belt of 43,000 km 2 (17,000 sq mi) and two islands of tallgrass prairie grasslands southeast of the main Blackland Prairie belt; both the main belt and the islands extend northeast–southwest.
