The first known settler in Frankfort was Joseph Oliver who purchased the 14 acres (57,000 m 2) between Lake Aux Becs Scies and Lake Michigan in 1852 and built a small cabin. Oliver was a woodsman who lived off the land: fishing, hunting, trapping and cutting timber.
The center piece is an upscale resort called The Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa. [2] Boyne Mountain has continued use of the first chairlift built, constructed by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1936 for use at its new resort in Sun Valley, Idaho. It is also the location of Avalanche Bay, the largest indoor water park in Michigan. [3]
McGinnis built his resort atop a hill in what is now Raccoon Creek State Park. Visitors to the resort walked down steps to the springs. The resort was very prosperous. At one time it featured a hotel, dance hall, livery stable and numerous guest cottages. Frankfort Mineral Springs closed during the first part of the 20th century. [6]
Watervale was originally platted, and houses constructed, in the 189s by Leo F. Hale, who began logging operations in the area. Hale went bankrupt by 1900, but in 1917, Oscar H. Kraft of Chicago purchased the town and adjacent land to use as a resort. Kraft and his family have operated Watervale as a resort since that time.
The Watervale Historic District is a resort, originally constructed as a lumber camp, located at 975-1422 Watervale Road on the shore of Lower Herring Lake in Blaine Township, Michigan. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1991 [ 2 ] and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
