The Western Mountain Athletic Conference (WMAC) is a 3A North Carolina High School Athletic Association conference which operates in the western region of North Carolina, [1] in Buncombe, Henderson and Haywood Counties.
Croatan High School is a public secondary school in Newport, North Carolina.The high school is part of the Carteret County Public Schools system. It serves the westernmost third of Carteret County, including the towns of Peletier, Cape Carteret, Cedar Point and western half of the island of Bogue Banks, which includes the town of Emerald Isle.
Public schools in Newport include the Carteret Pre-K Center, Newport Elementary School, and Newport Middle School. Newport Consolidated School, a first-through-12th-grade school established in 1926, was demolished in 1966 after the county completed construction of a new consolidated high school, West Carteret High in nearby Morehead City.

Football: On November 14, 2010, Mountain Valley won the Western Maine Class B championship with an 18–0 win over Wells High School and later won the state championship against Leavitt. It was the 5th Western Maine Class B championship in the last 7 seasons. The team won the Class B championships in 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010. [5]

The school was created in 1955 with the consolidation of Black Mountain High School and Swannanoa High School. It was named for prominent local textile tycoon and fashion designer Charles D. Owen. Black Mountain High School's mascot was the Dark Horses and Swannanoa high school's mascot was the Warriors, thus creating Owen High's mascot, the Warhorse.
