Prior to opening a business in Deadwood, Swearengen operated a dance house in Custer, South Dakota.As stated in the 1882 New Year Edition of the Black Hills Pioneer, which described the early history of Custer, "Al Swearengen was running a dance house of 30X150 feet in dimensions and day and night a man had to push and crowd to get into it."

The character is based on the real-life Al Swearengen, who owned the Gem Theater in Deadwood. Unlike the character (portrayed by British actor Ian McShane), the historical Al Swearengen was not English and was in fact born in Iowa. Seth Bullock (July 23, 1849 – September 23, 1919) was a Canadian-American frontiersman, business proprietor, politician, sheriff, and U.S. Marshal.He was a prominent citizen in Deadwood, South Dakota, where he lived from 1876 until his death, operating a hardware store and later a large hotel, the Bullock Hotel.
He partnered with Seth Bullock in a hardware store; in August 1876, attracted to Deadwood by the promise of a great deal of business stemming from the gold rush, they purchased a lot there from Al Swearengen and Henry Beaman and opened the Office of Star and Bullock, Auctioneers and Commission Merchants.
