U.S. Army Signal Corps Curtiss JN-3 biplanes with red star insignia, 1915 Nieuport 28 with the World War 1 era American roundels. The first military aviation insignias of the United States include a star used by the US Army Signal Corps Aviation Section, seen during the Pancho Villa punitive expedition, just over a year before American involvement in World War I began.
English: Roundel used by the United States armed forces from 19 August 1919 to 6 May 1942 until red dot removed to avoid confusion with Japanese insignia. Superseded very similar roundel whose colors and proportions differed slightly - the original version having the colors from the US flag, and a center dot 1/3 of the outer radius.
The center dot on this version is 1/3 of the diameter - on the later version it was reduced to being bound by lines connecting the inner points of the star. Note that the colors specified matched the US flag (Old Glory Red, and Old Glory Blue), unlike the later colors, particularly the blue, which was darker on the later roundels.
