Located on Gore Bay, a bay of Lake Huron's North Channel, it is one of the two incorporated towns of Manitoulin District, of which it is the administrative and government seat. After the Treaty of 1862, Manitoulin Island was open for white settlement.

It was formed on January 1, 2009, upon the amalgamation of the townships of Gordon and Barrie Island.
