The Merrick, or simply Merrick (Scottish Gaelic: A' Mhearag [4]), is a mountain in the Range of the Awful Hand, a sub-range of the Galloway Hills range, part of the Southern Uplands of Scotland. The summit elevation is 843 metres (2,766 feet), making it the highest mountain in the Southern Uplands and southern Scotland.
The more rugged Highland region contains the majority of Scotland's mountainous terrain, including the highest peak, Ben Nevis. Lowland areas, in the southern part of Scotland, are less mountainous and home to most of the population, especially the narrow waist of land between the Firth of Clyde and the Firth of Forth known as the Central Belt. The park extends to cover much of the western part of the southern highlands, lying to the north of the Glasgow conurbation, and contains many mountains and lochs. It is the fourth-largest national park in the British Isles , with a total area of 1,865 km 2 (720 sq mi) and a boundary of some 350 km (220 mi) in length.
The mountain forms an unafforested granite massif, whose highest point is about ten kilometres (six miles) east of Newton Stewart. It is the highest of the "Solway Hills" sub-range, and the southernmost of Scotland's 219 Grahams , thus making it, or rather its subsidiary top, Knee of Cairnsmore, the most southerly mountain in Scotland.
