Wayne Nathan Nance (October 18, 1955 – September 4, 1986), known as the Missoula Mauler, was an American serial killer in the state of Montana. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] Nance was shot and killed while committing a home invasion of a co-worker's residence; thus, Nance was never formally charged, tried, or convicted of any murder.
Montana's castle doctrine law was amended in 2009 allowing the use of deadly force if a homeowner "reasonably believes" an intruder is attempting to harm them. The amendment was sponsored by the U.S.'s biggest gun lobby, the National Rifle Association (NRA).
Some of the Montana crimes that Meirhofer was suspected of committing were later attributed to Wayne Nance (1955–1986), another serial killer active in Montana in the 1970s and '80s; and to long-haul truck driver Richard William Davis, who was posthumously linked by DNA to the 1974 murder of a five-year-old girl in Missoula, Montana.
