Sicilian (Sicilian: sicilianu, Sicilian: [sɪʃɪˈljaːnʊ] [3]; Italian: siciliano) is a Romance language that is spoken on the island of Sicily and its satellite islands. [4] It belongs to the broader Extreme Southern Italian language group (in Italian italiano meridionale estremo ).
Founded in 1951, it has its seat at the University of Palermo and is placed under the patronage of the President of the Sicilian Region and the Rectors of the Sicilian universities. During its history, the Center has published copious amounts of reference materials regarding the Sicilian language.
They used the Greek alphabet, along with a native one based upon Western Greek scripts, probably the Euboic-Chalkidic version. [1] According to scholar Markus Hartmann, "of the fewer than thirty inscriptions in total, only six appear to be at least in part intelligible and to be Siculian (i.e., most certainly neither Greek nor belonging to some other Italic or pre-Italic language)."
The "Vocabolario siciliano" is a five-volume lexicographic work on the Sicilian language by Giorgio Piccitto, Salvatore Tropea, and Salvatore Carmelo Trovato.It was realised with assistance from the Sicilian Autonomous Region and the National Research Council (Italy).
