    ok this is an old technique a teacher showed me years ago. to seal charcoal drawing without spending the extra money on charcoal sealing spray go to the dollarstore and get a good can of hairspray! it works and i still do it from time to time. also get one of those draws that you can store the drawings flat that's perfect for it's size, and to keep it clean cover the drawing sides with newsprint.

    Another trick I’ll use is to save the charcoal powder in a little jar (mostly from sharpening with sandpaper).     For richer dark tones, you need to use a compressed charcoal. You can use a stick or powdered. I don’t mind the tonal difference, but the directionality of your strokes in the BG definitely eye catching in a non-intentional sort of way. You should be able to balance that out with a paper towel and compressed charcoal.

    Now, the drawings themselves turn out fine (even though with their new scanner I have to turn the output levels up later) but the problem is...the specks. There's always these little black specks that you can't really see on the drawing itself, but the scanner picks them up. And getting rid of them is an incredibly monotonous task.
