Bronx River. The Bronx River in Shoelace Park, in The Bronx. The Bronx River (/ brɒŋks /), is a river that is approximately 24 miles (39 km) long, [ 4 ] and flows through southeastern New York in the United States and drains an area of 38.4 square miles (99 km 2). [ 4 ] It is named after colonial settler Jonas Bronck.
The park also includes a jogging/cycling mixed use path called the "Hudson River Greenway." Sections of this path began opening in 1999 and were an important evacuation route during the September 11 attacks in 2001. The greenway has now become the most used bike path in America with around 7000 riders per day. [72]
The New Hampshire and Maine sections of USBR 1 were approved in May 2011, [2] with the New Hampshire section following the East Coast Greenway. Also approved was an alternate route, U.S. Bicycle Route 1A, that runs closer to the coast through a portion of Maine. Each Sunday during the season, a 13-mile stretch of the Bronx River Parkway closes to cars between the Westchester County Center in White Plains and Scarsdale Road in Yonkers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
