Copacabana (/ ˌkoʊpəkəˈbænə / KOH-pə-kə-BAN-ə, US also /- ˈbɑːnə / -BAH-nə, Portuguese: [ˌkɔpakaˈbɐnɐ]) is a bairro (neighbourhood) located in the South Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is most prominently known for its 4 km (2.5 miles) balneario beach, which is one of the most famous in the world. [1]
It also has a portuguese pavement promenade with a wave pattern, as well as a bicycle lane between the promenade from the car lanes. There is a military base at each of the two extremities of the avenue: Forte de Copacabana in Copacabana, and Forte Duque de Caxias in Leme. Both are owned and administered by the Brazilian army. [1]
