Tawas City was founded in 1854 as the first city to be located on the shores of Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron north of Bay City, Michigan.Tawas City was designated as the county seat of Iosco County, and the first post office was established Jan. 6, 1856, with James O. Whittemore appointed postmaster.
Most of the population is located on the shoreline along US-23, East Tawas, Tawas City, and Oscoda County. The population density was 50 people per square mile (19 people/km 2). There were 20,432 housing units at an average density of 37 per square mile (14/km 2). By the 2020 census, its population was 25,237. [2]

Tawas Township is a civil township of Iosco County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,733 at the 2020 census . [ 3 ] Tawas City is adjacent to the township.
Tawas Point State Park is a public recreation area located on Lake Huron in Northern Michigan near the city of East Tawas, Michigan. The state park encompasses 183 acres (74 ha) at the end of a sand spit that forms Tawas Bay. It has been referred to as the "Cape Cod of the Midwest" and is a notable bird-watching site.
