Tom, a grey and black tabby, was a ship's cat of the US Navy, aboard the USS Maine (ACR-1) in 1898. When the ship was sunk in Havana Harbor on 15 February 1898 (an act which precipitated the Spanish–American War ), 266 sailors, a Pug mascot, and two of the three ship's cats died, but Tom survived (with injuries).
