The closest town to Lake Pukaki is Twizel, 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) to the south of the lake and Tekapo is 47 km (32 minutes drive) to the northeast. State Highway 8 skirts the southern end of the lake, and State Highway 80 runs north along the length of its western shore, to Mount Cook Village in the Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park.
Lake Tekapo Regional Park is a recreation area of 165 hectares (410 acres) located to the east of the township. The park includes picnic areas, an enclosed dog exercise park and 24 kilometres (15 mi) of cycling and walking tracks. Access to the park is by foot or bicycle from the Lake Tekapo township or by car from Lilybank Road. [29]
The Lake Tekapo Recreational Park Society was established in August 2008. [3] It provides support the council in developing the park and coordinate volunteer activities, with funding from local businesses and organisations.
