Ahnentafel, also known as the Eytzinger Method, Sosa Method, and Sosa-Stradonitz Method, allows for the numbering of ancestors beginning with a descendant. This system allows one to derive an ancestor's number without compiling the complete list, and allows one to derive an ancestor's relationship based on their number.
The example, shown below, is an ahnentafel of the Prince of Wales, listing all of his ancestors up to his fourth great-grandparents. William, Prince of Wales (born 21 June 1982) Charles III, King of the United Kingdom et al. (born 14 November 1948) Diana, Princess of Wales (1 July 1961 – 31 August 1997)
If two siblings have a child, the child has only two rather than four grandparents. In these circumstances, the probability is increased that the child will inherit two copies of a harmful recessive gene ( allele ) (rather than only one, which is less likely to have harmful effects).
Great-grandparents are often in the center to portray four or five generations, which reflect the natural growth pattern of a tree as seen from the top but sometimes there can be great-great-grandparents or more. In a descendant tree, living relatives are common on the outer branches and contemporary cousins appear adjacent to each other.
Although this template will create a table up to great-great-grandparents (ahnentafel 31) it will be wider than easily represented on most screens and/or printers so consider using {} or {{Ahnentafel-tree}} instead.
