John Gotti [1] [note 1] (/ ˈ ɡ ɒ t i / GOT-ee, Italian:; October 27, 1940 – June 10, 2002) was an American mafioso and boss of the Gambino crime family in New York City.He ordered and helped to orchestrate the murder of Gambino boss Paul Castellano in December 1985 and took over the family shortly thereafter, leading what was described as America's most powerful crime syndicate.

In 1990, Gotti married Kimberly Albanese. They have six children and live in Oyster Bay Cove on Long Island's North Shore. [47] [48] [49] His son, John Gotti III, is a professional mixed martial artist. [50] In November 2013, Gotti was stabbed while breaking up a fight in Syosset, New York. [51] Gotti authored a 2015 book, Shadow of My Father.
Gotti was arrested by the FBI in late 1990 on racketeering charges [61] [62] and denied bail 10 days later. [ 63 ] [ 64 ] On April 2, 1992, with the help of Gravano becoming a government witness, Gotti was convicted of numerous racketeering charges, including the 1985 Castellano murder.
On December 11, 1990, LoCascio was arrested alongside Gotti and Gravano and indicted for racketeering. At the time of his arrest, LoCascio was still publicly identified as the Gambino family's underboss. [1] At this time, Gravano decided to become a government witness and testified against his former associates.
April 29 – William Ciccone, a mentally ill Ozone Park, Queens resident, fired a shot at Gambino crime family boss John Gotti outside the Bergin Hunt and Fish Club. Ciccone was apprehended, taken to a Staten Island candy store and tortured and murdered by associate Joe Watts .
After federal law enforcement began focusing on Junior Gotti, John Gotti allegedly designated him as the new acting boss. [4] In 1998, D'Amico was charged with racketeering and loansharking. On January 19, 1999, he pleading guilty to a single count of operating an illegal gambling operation in Connecticut whose profits went to Junior Gotti. [5]
