The Academy of Notre Dame was established in 1854 by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in Lowell, Massachusetts. The boarding school outgrew that location and moved to rural Tyngsboro, on land formerly belonging to actress Nance O'Neil, in 1927. The school phased out boarding in the 1960s. [2]
Notre Dame High School has been an all-boys school since 1946. On April 3, 2024, the school announced that it will shift to a co-education model and will begin enrolling girls in fall 2025. [ 3 ] Notre Dame cited creating a "sustainable enrollment" as central to its decision to move to co-ed.

The Catholic Conference boasts very strong hockey programs. The conference has combined to win the Super 8 Hockey Tournament 22 times since its inception in 1991. Catholic Memorial has won the tournament 13 times, Boston College High School has won 6 times, and Malden Catholic has won 5 times.
