If .375 ammo availability is a deal breaker, and you want a Bigbore, look at a .444 or a 45-70. 45-70 is easiest to find, i think even wallmart carries shells for it. All 3 are great calibers and properly loaded can take all North American game at 200 yards or less.

With the .375 all good hits resulted in a dead deer. With the .45-70 all deer fell where they were hit. I attributed the difference to the size and shape of the .458” Hornady 300 HP with its broad flat nose versus the much smaller meplat on the .375s. Impact velocities were very close. Recoil was somewhat greater with the .45-70.

Factory .375 Win. is kind of scarce (to say the least) these days. But Buffalo Bore 38-55 is pretty plentiful on the net right now. Not cheap; but plentiful. Not sure if you can shoot other .38-55 ammo from your .375, but Buffalo Bore is pretty clear about their's. Last edited: Oct 25, 2016.

This allows using .375 data with better results. A 220 gn .375 bullet is accurate in them. Much cheaper per 100 than barnes. A lot of ready made cast for hunting and plinking. A 336 in 30-30 donor rifle is easy to aquire. A 336A with 24 inch bbl better, a new XLR better yet. If you load for a 30-30 click. here.

The 375 Winchester loads operate at much higher pressures than 38-55 loads. Therefore it is NOT recommended to shoot 375 Winchester loads in 38-55 rifles. 38-55 brass seems to be more readily available than 375 Win brass. Check out the Starline 38-55 brass that is 2.08" long (sometimes referred to as 38-55 short brass).

The ammo question: couldn’t find any .375 Win ammo, but saw plenty of .38-55 Win. I know the specs, the length, the Win 94 versus the 336, yada yada yada. Can I buy a box or two of .38-55 Win, load my 375, pull the trigger, and listen to steal plink or see a deer go down?

Brass alone goes for about $1 each if you can find it, so in these crazy days it’s not that out of line. Team 1894 member #67 1977 44 mag. Team 35 member #256 1964 Sears M45.

  11. shooting 38-55 in a 375 winchester chambered rifle

Shooting .38-55 ammo in the .375" bore of the .375 Win could easily result in unsafe pressures and nasty surprises. Your gun might survive, as might you.
