Deleting email from the Trash removes it from your account. Apps that use POP. Desktop apps, like Outlook, Thunderbird, and Mac Mail, can access AOL Mail using POP. Copies of your email download to the app, so actions in the app won't affect your account. One POP setting, however, will delete email from your account when it's downloaded.
When emails go missing in AOL Mail, it's often due to a few simple things; either the message is in the wrong folder, your third-party mail client's settings, or your account was deactivated due to inactivity. An inactive mailbox can be recovered by signing in to it. This action only reclaims the email address, not the original contents of the mailbox. Custom mailbox settings created before an account became inactive need to be created again. *Subject to storage limits, spam and email abuse policies and future changes in the storage policy.
