The London Borough of Merton (/ ˈ m ɜːr t ə n / ⓘ) is a London borough in London, England. The borough was formed under the London Government Act 1963 in 1965 by the merger of the Municipal Borough of Mitcham , the Municipal Borough of Wimbledon and the Merton and Morden Urban District , all formerly within Surrey .
In 2021 Criterion Capital submitted a planning application for two new towers on the south side of the existing tower. A petition against the towers has gathered over 500 signatures. In 2022, The London Borough of Merton started emergency inspection of the building after footage revealed a glass panel had fallen from a residents window. [12] [13]
The London Borough of Merton and its council were created under the London Government Act 1963, with the first election held in 1964. [3] For its first year the council acted as a shadow authority alongside the area's three outgoing authorities, being the councils of the municipal boroughs of Mitcham and Wimbledon and the urban district of Merton and Morden. [4]
South Wimbledon formed the northeastern section of the parish of Merton, with the separate parish of Wimbledon located to the north. The parish became the Merton Urban District in 1907, renamed Merton and Morden in 1913. South Wimbledon has formed part of the London Borough of Merton since 1965.
The Borough of Harrogate was a local government district with borough status in North Yorkshire, England, from 1974 to 2023. Its council was based in the town of Harrogate , but it also included surrounding settlements, including the cathedral city of Ripon , and almost all of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty .
