Kaneko was a studio artist for 11 years and served as founder and director of Ree Schonlau Gallery in Omaha from 1971 to 1984. She founded the Craftsmen's Guild and Omaha Brickworks, both of which offered workshops and art classes. She founded Alternative Worksite, an Artist-in-Industry program, in 1981. [4]

Bemis was co-founded by Ree Kaneko, wife of famed Japanese American artist Jun Kaneko. They live in Omaha, and opened a museum called The Kaneko in 2007. [4] Samuel Bak Museum: The Learning Center opened at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in February 2023.
On March 17, 2023, the Omaha Symphony performed a world premiere of Grammy award-nominated composer Andy Akiho’s composition written to honor visual artist and Omaha icon Jun Kaneko. Commissioned by the Omaha Symphony, the work incorporated Kaneko’s sculptures on stage, which Akiho played as percussive instruments.
