Neil Richard Gaiman [4] was born on 10 November 1960 [5] in Portchester, Hampshire. [6] Gaiman's family is of Polish-Jewish and other Ashkenazi origins. [7] His great-grandfather emigrated to England from Antwerp before 1914 [8] and his grandfather settled in Portsmouth and established a chain of grocery stores, changing the family name from Chaiman to Gaiman.
