Darik's Boot and Nuke, also known as DBAN / ˈ d iː b æ n /, is a free and open-source project hosted on SourceForge. [2] The program is designed to securely erase a hard disk until its data is permanently removed and no longer recoverable, which is achieved by overwriting the data with pseudorandom numbers generated by Mersenne Twister or ISAAC.

DBAN is a very prominent program in the area of secure drive wiping and is the best you are ever going to get relatively cheaply (DBAN is freeware). The next stop after this is paying several thousands of dollars per hard drive for professional services that have a 100% guarantee of data erasure.
nwipe was created to allow dwipe to be run outside DBAN, using any host distribution. It utilizes a simple text-based ncurses user interface or can be run directly from the command line . It is available as an installable package in the repositories of many Linux distributions , including Debian and Ubuntu .
It differs from other file deletion programs such as Darik's Boot and Nuke which attempt to erase data using block writes which cannot access certain portions of the hard drive. The internal firmware Secure Erase command can access data that is no longer accessible through software, such as bad blocks.

A block, a contiguous number of bytes, is the minimum unit of storage that is read from and written to a disk by a disk driver. The earliest disk drives had fixed block sizes (e.g. the IBM 350 disk storage unit (of the late 1950s) block size was 100 six-bit characters) but starting with the 1301 [8] IBM marketed subsystems that featured variable block sizes: a particular track could have blocks ...
