Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (IATA: BWI, ICAO: KBWI, FAA LID: BWI) – also known as Thurgood Marshall Airport, Baltimore/Washington International Airport, and simply as BWI Airport – is an international airport in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, [2] located 9 mi (14 km) south of downtown Baltimore and 30 miles (50 km) northeast of Washington, D.C. [6] [7]
The non-motorized companion to the Airport Loop is the BWI Trail, a 13.3-mile (21.4 km) [3] hiking and bicycling trail that completely encircles BWI Airport. Also constructed by MDSHA and designed for area commuters, the first 4.4-mile (7.1 km) section of the trail opened in July 1994 and the main loop was eventually completed in 1999.
The airspace is commonly depicted as resembling an "upside-down wedding cake". The innermost ring extends from the surface area around the airport to typically 10,000' MSL. Several outer rings usually surround it with progressively higher floors to allow traffic into nearby airports without entering the primary airport's Class B airspace.
There was at that time 112 aircraft based at this airport: 90 single engine, 13 multi-engine, 3 jet aircraft and 6 helicopters. [1] There are currently no plans to bring commercial service to the airport. The nearest airport with commercial service is Baltimore BWI airport, serving flights to many US cities and with a few flights to/from Europe.
