The Stanford School of Medicine logo. The Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program, sometimes referred to as the Stanford Institutes of Medical Research (SIMR), is a highly competitive 8-week research program held annually for approximately 60 students from the United States entering their final year of high school or first year of college.
The student body has close to 600 medical students, 650 resident and fellow physicians, 200 associated medical science students, and 50 physician assistant students. Also, 5,000 undergraduate students are enrolled in science classes at the school. The school has between 900 [3] and 1,000 [4] faculty members and more than 3,000 staff members.
With an initial student body of 45, the High School for Health Professions opened in 1972 as part of a partnership between the Houston Independent School District and the Baylor College of Medicine. [5] The curriculum was shaped in its early years as DeBakey was the world's first high school to specialize in medical professions. [6]
However, any high school junior could request an application, and acceptance largely ignored standardized test scores and graded academic performance. Like other Telluride programs, TASPs were free.
