Hawkes & Son (initially Rivière & Hawkes), [2] a rival to Boosey & Company, was founded in 1865 by William Henry Hawkes selling orchestral sheet music. The company also made musical instruments and spare parts such as clarinet reeds , and by 1925 Hawkes had set up an instrument factory in Edgware , North London . [ 6 ]
In 1948, the group Boosey & Hawkes acquired the Besson London brand. In 2003, Boosey & Hawkes joined The Music Group. In 2006, at the initiative of its CEO, Paul Baronnat, Buffet Crampon acquired two brass instrument brands, Antoine Courtois Paris (created in 1803) and Besson (created in 1837).
Boosey & Hawkes was sold to Imagem in April 2008 for £126m by its private equity owner, HgCapital. The sale was one of the world's largest of classical music. Hg Capital took Boosey & Hawkes off the stock exchange in 2003 for £75m. Under its ownership, the group made six acquisitions in new areas like jazz and tango.
Boosey and Hawkes which manufactured tenor brass in England and France from 1930 until instrument production was halted by a succession of sales and financial problems in 2003. F.E. Olds manufactured tenor brass from 1910 until ceasing operations in 1978 with an auction of all assets.

Albert's instruments were very well made, and finely tuned. His clarinets were very popular in England, where the leading clarinettist of the time, Henry Lazarus, owned eight of Albert's instruments. [1] When Boosey & Co. (now Boosey & Hawkes) decided to begin making clarinets, Albert was brought to London as a consultant. [1]
