MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Officials declared what would have been a winning, final-play touchdown by Virginia Tech an incomplete pass after a lengthy review of the final play, and No. 7 Miami escaped with a 38-34 win in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams on Friday night.
The call ended the game and kept Miami undefeated at 5-0 and 1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Virginia Tech fell to 2-3 and 0-1 in ACC action. There were a lot of emotions and reaction.
Tech was held scoreless in the early going, thanks to two Miami interceptions at the goal line as Virginia Tech was threatening to score. Late in the second quarter, Tech was finally able to get on the scoreboard with a field goal, but at halftime, the Miami Hurricanes led 14–3.
Virginia Tech led 14–7 at the half, but Virginia came out in the second half firing on all cylinders, and outscored Tech 21–0 by the 14 minute mark in the fourth quarter. Up by seven with only a few minutes left, Virginia pulled off a fake field goal on fourth down to keep possession away from the Hokies.
