Tatsuhiko Katayama, their editor, was worried about the one-shot crusade being too dark for the young demographic and asked Gotouge if they could write another type of the main character who would be "brighter". Following an encounter with Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Tanjiro is sent to train with Giyu's former instructor Sakonji Urokodaki in becoming a Demon Slayer and begins his quest to help Nezuko turn into a human again. Two years later, Tanjiro learns the "Water Breathing" style and takes part in a formidable exam.
It follows teenage Tanjiro Kamado, who strives to become a Demon Slayer after his family was slaughtered and his younger sister, Nezuko, is turned into a demon. Into the night, all four Demon Slayers fall asleep, with Tanjiro dreaming about being reunited with his lost family. In actuality, they have fallen into the Blood Demon Art of Enmu ; the demon had mixed his blood into the ink of their tickets, allowing his plan to go into motion without being noticed.
While relaxing in hot springs, Tanjiro and Nezuko encounter Genya, Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa's younger brother and fellow Demon Slayer, who angrily strikes Tanjiro and storms off. Back at the village, Mitsuri hints at Tanjiro about a "secret weapon" hidden in the village that can make him stronger and bids farewell to the siblings.
