This is a list of neighborhoods in the New York City borough of Manhattan arranged geographically from the north of the island to the south. The following approximate definitions are used: Upper Manhattan is the area above 96th Street. Midtown Manhattan is the area between 34th Street and 59th Street. Lower Manhattan is the area below 14th Street.
The highest numbered street on Manhattan Island is 220th Street, but Marble Hill is also within the borough of Manhattan, so the highest street number in the borough is 228th Street. Unlike most north–south streets in Manhattan, building address numbers along Sutton Place South increase when headed south. Sutton Place runs from 57th to 59th Streets. The streets are considered among the city's most affluent, and both portions are known for upscale apartments, much like the rest of the Upper East Side.
