The University of Granada (Spanish: Universidad de Granada, UGR) is a public university located in the city of Granada, Spain, and founded in 1531 by Emperor Charles V. The principal campus of the university is in Quito. On February 4, 1976, the Central Bank adopted the Golden Sun of the La Tolita culture from the northern coastal region of Ecuador as its logo. The Golden Sun is a mask with a headdress that represents a mixture between a star and an animal. It has 48 rays in the form of serpents.

Banco de la Union issued notes for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 & 100 sucres until it closed in 1895. Banco Anglo-Ecuatoriano issued notes for 1, 5 & 10 sucres until it was reorganized as Banco Internacional in 1887.
