Portrayed by Roberto Gómez Bolaños; Years: 1972–1992; El Chavo del Ocho is an 8-year-old orphan and the main character of the series. "Chavo" is a Mexican Spanish slang for "kid" or "boy"; Chavo's real name is unknown, but is supposed to be Chente, short for Vicente, after a supposed friend that nobody has ever met and according to Chavo, looks a lot like himself.

Eventually, Chespirito's age began to catch up with him, and it became harder for him to adequately portray some of his characters, especially El Chavo and El Chapulín Colorado. In 1992, at 63, Chespirito retired the El Chavo character from his show (he did the same thing to El Chapulín Colorado one year later).
In 1980, a new show premiered called Chespirito, which was an-hour-long and employed all of Chespirito's characters in sketches of varying lengths. On Chespirito, El Chómpiras and Los Caquitos were revived. However, Ramón Valdés had left Chespirito's troupe in 1979, so Peterete was forgotten and replaced with Botija (Édgar Vivar).
