I think today’s load carrying equipment has changed considerably from what we had in the ‘80s. Appears to better/ lighter. As a multi day hiker, I can attest that modern good gear is ultralight. My Gregory 55 liter backpack, one man 3 season tent, and 20 degree sleeping bag, totals less than 15 pounds. No substitute for modern technology.

The manuals of the day do not actually mention use of the worm (although they do list it as part of the issued equipment of the piece). That, I think, is the best testimony to it essentially being an emergency tool. If it were to be employed regularly to clean the bore it would have been described in the "school of the piece."
