The City of Fort Smith Department of Solid Waste Services’ landfill is a regional landfill that accepts debris from select counties in Arkansas and Oklahoma. Every year, on average, the landfill accepts 240,000 tons for disposal in an environmentally-friendly manner.
Recycling and Yard Waste Collection is now serviced EVERY WEEK along with Trash. Each Fort Smith single-family homes up to a 4-plex are provided one city-owned trash cart at no costs. Residents are encouraged to use trash bags inside the carts to promote cleanliness.

Residential collections that would normally be collected on Friday will be rescheduled for collection on the Wednesday before the holiday, Wednesday, March 27th.
We are no longer accepting glass for curbside recycling. You can recycle glass at the City of Fort Smith Regional Sanitary Landfill, Monday thru Friday from 7:30 am till 4:30 pm and Saturday 7:30 am till 3:30 pm. We accept food and beverage containers.

Compost Available for Purchase. Residents of Fort Smith: $10 per cubic yard + tax. Non-Residents: $15 per cubic yard + tax. The Fort Smith Landfill’s composting facility processes all of the yard waste received and produces compost. The availability of compost to customers is first come first serve.
Contamination. By keeping a low contamination rate, the City will be able to save money on recycling processing fees and trash tipping fees, which in turn keeps trash rates down for residents. The number one way to keep contamination low is to rinse out containers that have food residue before placing in recycle cart.
The Solid Waste Services Department offers a Dial-A-Truck program to residential customers who have an active sanitation account with the City of Fort Smith. This program allows a customer to call and schedule a pick up of large bulky items, including, but not limited to: Appliances. Couches.
