Ann Arbor is a great place to live... but you will not find the big city environment here obviously if that’s what you prefer. Academically, you will not go wrong with Ann Arbor. It is also a nice incubator for start ups although not at the scale of Boston.
There's hiking trails and nature paths and bike trails in the area, but it's relatively urban -- this isn't a remote mountain area. The Huron River runs through the city, and there is a livery that rents canoes and paddleboats. There's one or two fenced-in dogparks for no cost.
Ok, I lived in Ann Arbor for 7 years, and am going back to Ann Arbor from Chicago for my residency. I do like Ann Arbor, even compared to Chicago. First off, DETROIT IS THE ARMPIT of america. I grew up in metro-detroit, I've spent plenty of time in, and had my car stolen in Detroit. Friends of mine have been mugged at shotgun point in Detroit.
