The Brown County Courthouse was built in 1873–1874, and is a two-story, Greek Revival style brick building. It has a gable roof and two-tiered, flat-roofed frame tower. The Old Log Jail was built in 1879, and is a small two-story log building. It measures 12 feet by 20 feet, and was used as a jail until 1922.
The jail is attached to the rear of the Sheriff's Office, also known as the Sheriff's House. They are connected to the Old Indiana County Courthouse by a second floor pedestrian bridge. [2] It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. [1]
Nashville is a town in Washington Township, Brown County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,256 at the 2020 census. The town is the county seat of Brown County and is the county's only incorporated town. [4] The town is best known as the center of the Brown County Art Colony and as a tourist destination.
Nashville was laid out and platted in 1834 with 32 lots. Some stores and blacksmith shops were erected. However, a 1916 book on the county's history reports that the stores "disappeared long ago", though the blacksmith shops lasted longer, and all that was left of the community by then was a few houses.
