The population was 7,558 as of the 2020 census, [3] up from 6,895 in 2010. It is the county seat of Montgomery County and the principal city of the Mount Sterling micropolitan area.

The Mount Sterling Micropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of three counties in Kentucky, anchored by the city of Mount Sterling. As of the 2000 census , the μSA had a population of 40,195 (though a July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 44,046).

Kentucky Route 713 (KY 713) is a 32.986-mile-long (53.086 km) state highway in Montgomery County and western Menifee County, Kentucky, that runs from U.S. Route 460 (US 460) north of Grassy Lick to US 460 again in western Frenchburg via Grassy Lick, Mount Sterling, Spencer, Walkers Crossing, Means, Coburn, and Fagan.
