Advanced Level (A-Level) Mathematics is a qualification of further education taken in the United Kingdom (and occasionally other countries as well). In the UK, A-Level exams are traditionally taken by 17-18 year-olds after a two-year course at a sixth form or college .
Each question is worth 20 marks, and so the maximum a candidate can score is 120. For examinations up to and including the 2018 papers, the specification for STEP 1 and STEP 2 was based on Mathematics A Level content while the syllabus for STEP 3 was based on Further Mathematics A Level. The questions on STEP 2 and 3 were about the same difficulty.
The Test of Mathematics for University Admission is a paper-based 2 hour and 30 minute long test, which is to be completed without dictionaries or calculators. It has two papers which are taken consecutively: Paper 1: Mathematical Thinking Paper 1 has 20 multiple-choice questions, with 75 minutes allowed to complete the paper.
The 'S' level Higher Mathematics papers, for example, were not marked unless at least 75 (Distinction) was secured in the 'A' level pure mathematics and/or applied mathematics papers. The marks were normalised, but usually completion of 2 or 3 questions of 10 on the paper offered was sufficient to secure a distinction.
These subjects are French, English, Spanish, Mandarin and Science (Level 1 candidates sit a single Science paper, Level 2 three separate papers).
