Cullowhee (/ ˈ k ʌ l ə hw iː / [4]) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jackson County, North Carolina, United States. It is located on the Tuckasegee River , and the permanent population was 7,682 at the 2020 census [ 5 ] up from 6,228 at the 2010 census .

NC 107, Old NC 107, and NC 107-Alternate all serve the township as major roads; NC 107 is the only 4-lane roadway. Western Carolina University , the village of Forest Hills , and the communities of Speedwell, Old Cullowhee Road, Buzzards Roost, and Dicks Gap are all within the township.
Forest Hill was a large Victorian mansion built with a commanding view of the Cullowhee Valley. Later, the area became known as the Cox Farm, for a later owner. The mansion of Forest Hill was demolished in the 1980s, soon after developers began to construct housing here for the neighborhood to be known as Forest Hills.

The highway is four lanes between Sylva and Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, and two lanes beyond.Between WCU and Cashiers (about 18 miles (29 km)), the highway is a winding mountain road, and continues in this manner all the way to the South Carolina state border.
Hennon Stadium has been home to the Western Carolina University baseball program for 32 years. The baseball facility was officially renamed Childress Field at Hennon Stadium in a dedication ceremony on April 23, 1994.
