The Chinese University of Hong Kong [b] (CUHK) is a public research university in Sha Tin, New Territories, Hong Kong. Established in 1963 as a federation of three colleges – Chung Chi College , New Asia College , and United College , [ 4 ] it is Hong Kong's second-oldest university, with the first being the University of Hong Kong .
In 1963, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was founded, consisting of three existing Chinese-language post-secondary colleges, namely: New Asia College, United College, and Chung Chi College. In 1973, New Asia College moved from Farm Road in Kowloon to its newly built campus at CUHK, where it remains today.
Today, CUHK is organised into nine constituent colleges and eight academic faculties, and remains the only collegiate university in the territory. The university operates in both English and Chinese, although classes in most colleges are taught in English.
CUHK degrees will be conferred to students of CUHK–Shenzhen who meet the requirements of their degree programs. [10] A graduation certificate will also be conferred by CUHK-Shenzhen. [11] There are three "Nobel laureate research labs" in CUHK-Shenzhen led by the Nobel laureates Arieh Warshel, Brian Kobilka and Aaron Ciechanover. [12]
CUHK is a bilingual university; in general, courses are taught in English and/or Chinese. [2] The faculty remains to be one of the two medical faculties in Hong Kong, along with the older LKS Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong. They are the only two tertiary institutions which offer medicine and pharmacy education in the city.
According to the QS World University Rankings – Nursing Subject 2024, CUHK Nursing holds the 1st position in both Hong Kong and Asia, and is ranked 8th globally, marking its first-ever entry into the world’s top 10. Currently, it stands as the only nursing school in Asia to be placed among the top 10 nursing institutions worldwide.
It was founded in 1963. [1]One of the Arts Faculty's first generation of graduates, Dr. Yu Ying-shih, a student of Qian Mu, and a former pro-vice Chancellor of the university is a well-known historian and a recipient of the John W. Kluge Prize for his lifetime achievement in the humanities.
Morningside College was established in 2006 with donations from the Morningside Foundation and the Morningside Education Foundation. [citation needed] The Scottish economist and winner of the 1996 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, Professor Sir James Mirrlees, was appointed the founding Master that same year.
