Wood lagging is a method of banding wooden slats around pipelines to protect against impact, abrasion, and corrosion. Wooden lagging acts as a sheath, protecting the pipeline from damage, [ 1 ] and is especially useful in rocky terrain; steep inclines; around rivers or swampy areas; and other rough terrain. [ 2 ]
A boiler is a closed vessel in which fluid (generally water) is heated. The fluid does not necessarily boil. The heated or vaporized fluid exits the boiler for use in various processes or heating applications, [1] [page needed] [2] [page needed] including water heating, central heating, boiler-based power generation, cooking, and sanitation.
The term for pipe and boiler insulation is "lagging" [53] which derives from the cooper's term for a wooden barrel stave. [54] Two of the earliest steam locomotives used wooden lagging to insulate their boilers: the Salamanca , the first commercially successful steam locomotive, built in 1812, [ 4 ] and the Locomotion No. 1 , the first steam ...
In a solar water heating system, a solar hot water storage tank stores heat from solar thermal collectors. [3] The tank has a built-in heat-exchanger to heat domestic cold water. In relatively mild climates, such as the Mediterranean, the (heavily insulated but metal-wrapped) storage tanks are often roof-mounted.
Removable insulation blankets can be installed on many indoor and outdoor components such as boilers, steam traps, pipes, valves, flanges, and more. [2] They are typically used to prevent heat from escaping hot components; however, they can also be used to prevent freezing or warming of cold components.
Thermal insulation in buildings is an important factor in achieving thermal comfort for its occupants. [4] Insulation reduces unwanted heat loss or gain and can decrease the energy demands of heating and cooling systems. It does not necessarily deal with issues of adequate ventilation and may or may not affect the level of sound insulation.
