US. 57 stone in pervious pavement has been in use for decades. The Walden Pond installation was the first pervious (asphalt) pavement installed in the US and has held up well since 1977. It was built with 2.5 inches of porous asphalt, over 1.5 inches of AASHTO Type A washed stone, over 10.5 inches of AASHTO Type B washed stone.

  3. Self Compacting Soil (#57 stone) - Eng-Tips

    www.eng-tips.com/threads/self-compacting-soil-57-stone.236920

The #57 stone develops good density,(compaction), from free fall due to the many sizes available for each size void. With no compactive effort, a density of over 85%, (very limited settlement possibility) can be achieved with little excess horizontal pressure on the backfilled wall which can come from compaction energy. GREAT STUFF!

#57 stone has a large void volume, which can be filled with surrounding soil raveling into those voids by groundwater movement and by surface water infiltration. Use select structural fill material and compact it in accordance with acceptable compaction standards.

Sep 8, 2003. 31. US. I do not believe it is referred to as 'AASHTO 57 stone', however, #57 stone as defined by quarries, state agencies, etc. is an aggregate blend of size 5, 6, & 7 stone. This material cannot be 'compacted' in a true sense, but can be properly oriented with compaction equipment. This is particularly important when using stone ...

  7. Permeability of #57 stone - Storm/Flood engineering - Eng-Tips

    www.eng-tips.com/threads/permeability-of-57-stone.335502

Geotechnical. #57 stone should be pretty clean with little sand. I would expect a permeability of between 0.1 and 10 cm/sec. Permability will depend on how the material is placed in the trench (i.e. how much contamination is allowed), comapction, and actual gradation. Now to the real question, why do you want to calculate velocity in a French ...

  8. Can replace 57 with 4 and not compact? 3 - Eng-Tips

    www.eng-tips.com/threads/can-replace-57-with-4-and-not-compact.193256

The only possible compaction that can occur with clean angle-faced #57 stone is the displacement caused by pushing it into the trench walls and bottom. If you pour it into a proctor mold, you can beat it all day and the only compaction you will get is from breaking the stone with the hammer into smaller pieces.

Per Sieve analysis, #57 stone is comprised of a majority 3/4" stone and has up to 5% that is larger than 1" and less than 1-1/2". Put differently, #57 stone has a maximum aggregate size of 1-1/2" with a majority of the composition at 3/4". Similarly #67 stone has a maximum aggregate size of 1" with a majority of the composition at 1/2".

I agree with others that a well compacted crushed stone base gives you 1) a good platform and leveling platform to place your steel, 2) protection against rain and 3) protection against construction disturbance as foundations are formed and poured.

  11. #57 Stone as Fill - Earthwork/grading engineering - Eng-Tips

Jan 12, 2001. 73. US. Our firm often uses #57 stone as backfill beneath footings when soft cohesive soils are removed, and high groundwater conditions exist. The stone layer thickness does not normally exceed 12 inches. If the adjacent soil profile consists of cohesive soils, the possibility of soil washing into voids in the stone is probably ...
