Polk Township District No. 2 School, also known as the Barber School, is a historic one-room school located in Polk Township, Marshall County, Indiana. It was built about 1901, and is a one-story, "T"-plan brick building with Queen Anne style detailing. The building consists of front cloak room section with a single large classroom.
In 1848 the family moved to Terre Haute, Indiana. [1] There Hinton began to work part-time as a barber, while attending a subscription school organized by the local African-American community for four years. He next attended a Quaker high school in Hartford in Vigo County for two years. [2] [3] [4]

[1] Some Gary residents in the outskirts attend schools administered by the River Forest Community School Corporation; [1] River Forest does not operate any schools in Gary. There are also two Head Start Schools operated independently funded by the government.
The school is a consolidation of Alfordsville and Montgomery High Schools, opening in 1965. Alfordsville High School opened in 1922, with its original mascot being the Yellow Jacket. Montgomery High School, opened 10 years earlier in 1912. In 1957, Montgomery High School suffered from a fire, destroying the school.

The Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home was home to Morton Memorial Schools (the school was K–12 grade).
