The Rottweiler (/ ˈ r ɒ t w aɪ l ər /, UK also /-v aɪ l ər /, German: [ˈʁɔtvaɪ̯lɐ] ⓘ) [1] [2] is a breed of domestic dog, regarded as medium-to-large [3] [4] or large. [5] [6] The dogs were known in German as Rottweiler Metzgerhund, meaning Rottweil butchers' dogs, [7] [8] because their main use was to herd livestock [3] and pull carts laden with butchered meat to market. In 1945 over 100 puppies were registered, indicating the existence of about 350–400 dogs of the breed at that time. [4] The breed was first recognised internationally in 1939, when the Swiss Standard was first published by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. Born October 1, 1917, Etzel von Oeringen was a male German Shepherd dog bred by a private breeder, Robert Niedhardt of Quedlinburg, Germany.
