Raleigh is governed by council-manager government. It is composed of eight members, including the Mayor of Raleigh. Five of the members are elected from the five districts that cover the city. The remaining three, including the mayor, are elected at-large. They are all elected every two years. The new council is installed in early December.

This is a list of mayors of Raleigh since the creation of the office in 1857. The Mayor is the head of a council-manager system of government for Raleigh , North Carolina . The office was created in 1857 when a new charter was established for the city to replace the original 1795 charter.
Raleigh operates under a council-manager government. Raleigh City Council consists of eight members; all seats, including the Mayor's, are open for election every two years. Five of the council seats are district representatives and two seats are citywide representatives elected at-large. [176]
More than two dozen people are running to serve on Raleigh City Council. Early voting runs from Oct. 17 to Nov. 2. Election Day is on Nov. 5.
